Overview

The Computer-Aided Design & Drafting (CADD) program combines creativity and precision to help prepare students to create buildings, mechanical devices, electrical systems and more with AutoCAD software.

CADD projects feature interesting design and drafting challenges with a lot of variety: as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes, CAD drafting technicians design plans “to build everything from microchips to skyscrapers”.(2)

Learn to combine artistry with precision and hands-on workmanship using AutoCAD and modern technology for a challenging, yet rewarding CADD career. True to the hands-on nature of computer-aided design and drafting, our CADD program emphasizes practical experience and skills.

Our CADD students spend most of their time “getting into it” with multi-dimensional blueprints, 3d designs and computer-aided drafting; they learn how to translate hand drawn drafting designs into computer-generated AutoCAD drawings. Smaller class sizes may also mean opportunities for personalized attention from instructors. In the CADD classes at Remington College, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn on advanced software like AutoCAD to help keep you on the cutting-edge of the most popular design software
  • Take drafting courses in a modern workstations that helps transform practice into skill

CADD

Drafting was originally done with pencil and paper, and training in traditional, technical drafting is still necessary to fully understand and explain concepts. But today’s computers allow CADD operators to construct variations of plans and make changes quickly.

CADD technicians, often called Drafters or CADD Operators, may work with engineering firms, contractors, city planners, and manufacturers to create technical drawings that give building instructions for everything from computer hard drives to architecture.

Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Duties may include:

  • Communicating with clients and engineers
  • Naming specific drafting and design elements
  • Detailing structures and machine parts in both hand and computer drawings
  • Working with engineers to determine drawing dimensions and construction materials

A CADD technician is often trained in civil, electrical, architectural, piping, or mechanical drafting and may use these concentrations to serve specific areas of engineering.

What are the job prospects for CADD Technicians?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employers prefer CADD technician job applicants who have completed training after high school at a technical institute, community college, or 4-year college or university.(2)

Key Skills for a CADD Drafting Career

Successful drafters often demonstrate strong mechanical ability, visual aptitude, communication skills, and attention to detail. Many drafting technicians have graduated from a CADD training program with either a certificate or diploma like the one available at our campuses
