On August 13, 2011, Remington College – Colorado Springs Campus participated in a “March for Miracles Run/Fun Walk” to raise funds for the Starlight Foundation (http://www.starlight.org/).Our team of instructors, staff, students, and their family members either walked for one mile or ran a 5K circular course (a distance of 3.1 miles) and helped set up and run various stations during the event, held at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
The group of about 30 runners and walkers from our Colorado Springs college raised $860.84, and the funds were matched by the corporate office of Remington College, Inc., for a total donation of $1,721.68 to the Starlight Foundation of Colorado.Starlight Foundation Sponsors in Colorado SpringsFor nearly 30 years, the Starlight Foundation has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for children around the globe with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and life-altering injuries. The organization provides entertainment, education, and family activities that help these children and their families cope with the pain, fear, and isolation of prolonged illness. One of the sponsors of this year’s walk/run in Colorado Springs was Integrity Urgent Care. Their organization and its company contact, Jeff Wilkerson, have been valued supporters of our Colorado Springs Campus, helping to establish the company as an externship site for our students and hiring several of our health sciences graduates. Hueser Chiropractic, another organization that supports our students by providing externship and job opportunities, is also an eager partner in these charity events through their donations and by providing services at the event gathering.
Post-Event Reactions from Our Colorado Springs CollegeColorado Springs Director of Education Grace Trujillo expressed her appreciation for another successful team effort and explained how important these events are to the Campus.“Once again our students, staff and faculty stepped up to help those who are in need! We strongly encourage everyone to participate in these charity events, because they help to strengthen that ‘giving’ spirit. These events also strengthen our community relationships, which in turn offer greater opportunities for the success of our students and our Campus. I am thrilled that organizations in our community think to invite us to partner in these events. Thank you all!”Colorado Springs Pharmacy Technician student Melissa Parker said, “Thank you for the opportunity to volunteer for Starlight Children's Foundation. I had a great time helping out. I brought two of my children to have them experience this, too. I wanted to share with them the joy of helping out the children. We helped make the free popcorn and handed it out to the participants. We are looking forward to another run/walk and to volunteering in the community. Again, thank you!”
