    • Hair Care: Hair care includes cutting, styling, coloring, and chemically treating hair. Cosmetologists who choose to specialize in hair care are called hairdressers or hairstylists, and they often work in salons or spas.
    • Nail Care: Some cosmetologists, known as nail technicians or manicurists, focus exclusively on nail care, which includes manicures, pedicures, polish, and extensions.
    • Skin Care: Skin care specialists who specialize in advanced cleansing, waxing, and exfoliation techniques.

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), overall employment for those seeking a career in cosmetology is expected to increase by 20 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is faster than the national average.(2) 

    Is licensing required for cosmetology careers

    In order to begin work, cosmetologists must be licensed. Licensing requirements vary by state, but generally candidates are required to graduate from a cosmetology program and pass the state licensing exam. The BLS expects entry-level positions for licensed cosmetologists to be 'good.'(2)
