Contributed by Criminal Justice Instructor Peter French In early May 2011, Police Commander Keith Sulzer, of Cleveland’s Second District Police Department, asked Cleveland Criminal Justice Instructor Peter French if Remington College would like to participate in their annual Spring Food Drive, sponsored by the Cleveland Community Police Division in support of St. Augustine's Center for Hunger in Cleveland. Commander Sulzer has appeared before the Cleveland West Criminal Justice students on several occasions to discuss police matters and to encourage students to seek careers as part of a safety force. “He is part of our Criminal Justice speakers’ bureau, does an excellent job for us, and is highly regarded,” said Mr. French.Drive Takes Shape Quickly After obtaining approval, Mr. French organized the four-day food drive on Campus. Flyers were posted around the school to encourage participation. Cleveland Campus staff member (and excellent artist) Joe Bianchini also prepared a poster about the drive, which was displayed in a common area. “It caught everyone’s attention,” noted Mr. French.
Empty containers were set up on Campus to collect the food. “The drive started on Monday and ran until Friday morning. We had tremendous participation by staff and students alike. It was exciting to see everyone’s generous contributions,” said Mr. French. He explained, “Since I'm a Criminal Justice Instructor, I concentrated my efforts on our Criminal Justice students, and they came through with flying colors. They understood the nature of the event, and they truly enjoyed their participation. They realized that assisting others is part of their mission to serve their community.”Collected Items Delivered On the last day of the drive, Mr. French collected the donations and delivered them in his van to the Cleveland Second District Police Department. A large truck was set up in front of the Police Department to accept area donations. A reporter from WEWS Channel 5 was stationed near the truck, covering the collection effort. He noticed Mr. French taking the food from his vehicle up the ramp of the truck and asked him for an interview. The interview questions ranged from our location to why Remington was participating. “I explained that Remington College regularly supports community efforts of this nature and that this was our first participation with the Cleveland Police Department,” said Mr. French, adding, “I also commented that Remington’s Cleveland West Campus remains committed to these types of endeavors.”Food Drive Results and Reaction The food drive gathered 4,650 pounds of food to be distributed to St. Augustine's Center. Commander Sulzer estimated that Remington College collected about 200 pounds of food. Criminal Justice Student Andrea McIntire summed up her feelings about being able to contribute: “It’s a thrill to assist others in their time of need, and I really enjoy helping others.” “Mission accomplished,” noted Mr. French, adding, “We all derived a great sense of satisfaction from being part of a successful food drive. Commander Sulzer mentioned that he will surely contact Remington College if they have another community food drive. Criminal Justice is a large part of our Campus, and we love to assist in whatever way we can.”
