In early May 2011, Criminal Justice Degree student Dagur Galvan experienced a devastating blow. He and his wife, who was nine months pregnant, had to vacate their apartment in the middle of the night due to a fire that burned their entire unit, including several cars in the parking lot. The couple had just received most of their baby shower gifts, which were ruined in the fire, along with almost every belonging they shared. Campus administration sprang into action after learning the news. Remington College – Houston Campus President LaShundia Brooks and Department Chairs Trina Collins, A’Timberly Mapp, and Edward Owens partnered with the Sigma Phi Alpha Chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association, the Criminal Justice fraternity on Campus, to hold a two-day fundraiser to help replace some of the couple’s belongings. Hot dogs, Frito pies, soda, and more were sold at the Campus to help raise the funds.
The spirit of giving became infectious, as Remington College President and CEO Jack Forrest agreed to match all funds raised. This gesture motivated students, faculty, and staff, and the Campus is proud to announce that it raised close to $1,000 for the couple. The funds raised were immediately matched by Remington College’s corporate office. Houston Criminal Justice Instructor Crystal Radford-Ritzberg said, “I am so proud of my Campus for coming to the aid of a student in need.” Happily (and coincidentally), the couple welcomed their baby, Caleb, into the world with a successful delivery on the day of the fundraiser! Dagur Galvan was extremely moved by the outpouring of support and sends his deepest appreciation to each person involved. Currently, Dagur and is family are doing very well, and things are almost back to normal. He recently brought baby Caleb to the Campus for a visit. “He is adorable!” noted Ms. Radford-Ritzberg.
