    Lafayette Medical Assistant Training

    The curriculum for our diploma program covers front-office and back-office duties performed in a modern medical office.(2) You participate in lecture and lab sessions from the start of your program. Our clinical labs build on what you learn in the lectures and give you perspective on what you can expect in the field.(1) In our labs, you assume the roles of patient and clinical medical assistant to understand the job from different viewpoints.

    Under instructor supervision, you can gain valuable practice and skill in these areas:

    • Taking vital signs and learning the skills necessary to be CPR certified
    • Performing general exams; setting up trays for exams and procedures
    • Bandaging and positioning patients; working with mobility assistance devices
    • Performing injections, venipunctures, and capillary punctures
    • Conducting blood tests of capillary blood glucose, hematocrit, hemoglobin, cholesterol, and more
    • Performing catheterizations using simulation equipment

    And that's not all! You spend the last month of your program in an in-field externship, training on the job alongside healthcare professionals so you can see what it's like in an actual job setting.(3)

    Lafayette Medical Assistant Certification

    Included in the cost of tuition is the first attempt of the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. (4,5)

    Medical Assisting program graduates may also be eligible for other certification and licensure opportunities.

    Medical Assistant Training School's Connection with Lafayette Parish

    Lafayette Parish community connections have included:

    • Guest speakers: Visitors to our Campus range from physicians to medical office managers to electronic health records technicians. They supplement our teaching and offer unique expertise on a variety of topics.
    • American Heart Saver: A Lafayette-area cardiologist practice initiated this day-long annual event to teach the community the correct way to administer CPR. Our MA students have participated in this event, helping to train hundreds of people about CPR.
    • Nightingale Honor Society: Students with at least a 3.8 GPA, good attendance, and an excellent work ethic are nominated by instructors. Once inducted, students are assigned community service hours and must maintain a GPA of 3.5.
    • Our students also take part in school fundraisers and medical events like Toys for Tots, Food for the Hungry, and Coats for Kids. The Lafayette Campus also holds a Clinic Day, when the community can benefit from health screenings performed by our Medical Assisting students. Screenings include blood pressure checks, glucose testing, ear and eye testing, and weight and height readings.

    Lafayette and Acadiana healthcare practitioners who have helped to train and prepare our students have included:

    • Scott Family Physicians: A four-physician family practice office.
    • Dr. Bradley Chastant: An ear, nose, and throat (ENT), plastic surgery, and allergy clinic with a modern electronic health record (EHR) system.
    • Dr. Stephen Salopek: An internal medicine specialist.
    • Dr. Wayne Daigle: An obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) specialist.
    • Teche Action Clinic: A rural community facility of clinics including acute care, OB/GYN, pediatrics, and dental.

    Lafayette Medical Assistant Instructor Team

    Our Lafayette Campus has or has had instructional staff including LPNs and RNs who have worked in hospital and doctor settings in roles such as nursing director, pediatric nurse, home health nurse, and physician-based office nurse.
