Our Occupational Therapy Assistant degree can be completed in as few as 24 months and exposes students to a diverse array of clinical topics, including; pediatrics, mental health, neuro-rehabilitation, geriatrics, and physical disabilities.(3)

As a “hybrid” program, the curriculum is divided into online courses, in-person labs, and fieldwork. Unlike traditional colleges with lengthy semesters, we guide our students through our online OTA program in eight 3 month quarters.(3)

Benefits of the Remington College Occupational Therapy Assistant Degree Program:

  • The hybrid approach uses online coursework to supplement the in-person instruction (labs) and fieldwork courses.
  • The online courses help students fit school into their existing home and work schedules.
  • Lab instruction provides students with the opportunity to work directly with qualified instructors who have real-world experience in the field.
  • Through practical experience obtained in fieldwork, students are exposed to diverse working environments and therapeutic skills.
  • During the fieldwork courses, students get valuable real-world practice in working with psychosocial issues, physical disabilities, pediatrics, holistic occupational therapy techniques, and more.

Our Occupational Therapy Assistant school training includes fieldwork rotations that give students the real-world experience that many employers value. Some examples of the settings where students can complete their fieldwork include: home healthcare services, nursing care facilities, schools, private medical offices, and hospitals.

Graduates from our program are eligible to take the national certification exam through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Information about our graduates’ certification exam pass rates, along with those of other schools in the state, are available at https://secure.nbcot.org/data/schoolstats.aspx.

Job Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects Occupational Therapy Assistant jobs to increase by 40% between 2014 and 2024, which is “much faster than average.” According to the BLS, this faster than average growth can be attributed to an expected rise in the health needs of the growing elderly population, as well as the need to treat children and young adults.(1)

The BLS explains, “After the therapist has evaluated a patient and designed a treatment plan, the occupational therapy assistant can provide many aspects of the treatment.”

Assistants may work directly with patients, helping them with therapeutic stretching and exercise, teaching them to use prescribed medical devices, and using cognitive behavioral techniques to assist with cognitive and mental deficits.

Because Occupational Therapy Assistants often engage in physical and cognitive activities with people who may struggle with simple day-to-day activities, it is crucial for assistants to possess the right personal and interpersonal skills to be successful including:

  • Effective Communication
  • Compassion and Patience
  • Physical Strength and Endurance

Occupational Therapy Assistants may work in a variety of environments, including home healthcare services, nursing care facilities, schools, private medical offices, and hospitals.

Occupational Therapy Assistant

ACCREDITED LEARNING INSTITUTION

The occupational therapy assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814-3449. ACOTE’s telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA and its Web address is www.acoteonline.org. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure. Further, completion of Remington College’s occupational therapy assistant program does not guarantee that a graduate will pass the NBCOT exam or be able to obtain state licensure. Prior to enrolling, individuals interested in this program are responsible for researching and understanding all examination, registration and/or licensure requirements for a career as an occupational therapist assistant for each state in which they may seek licensure.
