  • Medical Assisting Students at Fort Worth College Know the Importance of Holiday Blood Donations

Contributed by Joy Cornwell, Librarian at Remington College in Fort Worth

On December 21, 2010, there was a flurry of activity at the Remington College in Fort Worth, Texas.

From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and again from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Carter Blood Care was on location at our Fort Worth Campus to help our healthcare college students, faculty, and staff, give the gift of life this past holiday season.

In just one day, the students at our Fort Worth Campus took time out of their busy holiday and school schedules to show their support by donating 63 pints of blood, which may save up to 189 lives!

Long-Term Partnership with Carter Blood Care Allows Students to Give the Gift of Life

From June through December 2010, a total of 282 donors from the Fort Worth Campus participated in Carter Blood Care blood drives. In total, 202 whole blood units were donated by Remington College medical assisting students, faculty, and staff.

Some opted to participate in a special type of blood donation that allows a donor to safely give two units of red blood cells during one donation session. Called a "double red cell donation," it focuses on the most frequently used blood component that is needed by almost every type of patient who requires a transfusion.

Remington College in Fort Worth had donors who contributed eight double red cell units.

Led by the Career Services Department, the Campus wanted to show their support by bringing life and hope to others through the Volunteer Blood Donor Program.

Blood donor TeQuila Harrison showed her support and said, "It never hurts to give."

Carter Blood Care is a not-for-profit organization that operates on behalf of patients and their loved ones in 54 Texas counties. The organization is guided by the philosophy that community blood donations should benefit community patients, and that blood centers must be responsive to the community that supports them.

In 2009, Remington College - Fort Worth Campus earned the Top Performers Award given by Carter Blood Care, which recognized the giving nature of the students and faculty.
