  • What is done in a Medical Laboratory?

Lab testing is used to detect, diagnose, and monitor diseases. Today, the volume of lab tests performed is increasing, as our population grows and new types of tests become available. This increased need has helped to create more jobs for clinical lab assistants and medical assistants.

What can Medical Laboratory Assistants do?

Clinical lab technicians or lab assistants examine and analyze bodily fluids and cells. Generally, they perform less complex lab tests than technologists do. For example, they may collect specimens or follow instructions to conduct manual tests. They typically use microscopes, cell counters, and other lab equipment, and their work is supervised by medical and clinical lab technologists or lab managers.

Medical assistants also collect and prepare lab specimens and sometimes perform basic lab tests, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. They might also teach patients about medications and special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by a doctor, draw blood, prepare patients for X-rays, take electrocardiograms (EKGs), remove sutures, and change dressings.

What is the career outlook for Medical Laboratory Assistants?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for medical assistants are expected to grow 35 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Jobs for clinical lab workers are expected to grow 14 percent between the same period.

Where can Medical Laboratory Assistants work?

Medical and lab assistants work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, medical and diagnostic labs, and other health care agencies or offices. Today, a growing number of group practices, clinics, and other health care facilities need qualified support staff, including medical assistants who can handle both office and clinical duties.
