  • National Technical Honor Society at Remington College in Tampa Is Committed to the Community

Ever since Deb Hoffman, the Director of Career Services at Remington College – Tampa Campus, became advisor to the on-Campus National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) in 2009, the organization has grown rapidly.

The mission of NTHS is to honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, and enhance career opportunities for its members.

Requirements for Joining the National Technical Honor Society
Tampa college students who seek additional responsibilities and recognition above and beyond their standard coursework can choose to pursue membership in the NTHS.

Students must maintain a 3.20 GPA or higher, have absences of less than 17% on their attendance record, complete a formal application with a letter of recommendation from an instructor, pay a membership fee of $35, and commit to doing volunteer work in the community.

How Students Benefit from National Technical Honor Society Membership
Once students are accepted into the NTHS, they receive a certificate of membership, an NTHS lapel pin and sticker, and a letter of recommendation to add to their portfolio.

NTHS members are also eligible to apply for scholarships and awards. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000. In mid-2011, Remington College – Tampa Campus Cosmetology student Lynn Newman was awarded one such scholarship, for $500.

How Tampa Benefits from Remington College’s NTHS Chapter
One of the most important aspects of NTHS membership is the group’s dedication to the local community. Under Ms. Hoffman’s guidance, the NTHS has partnered with several non-profit organizations in the community to raise funds and champion their causes.

    These organizations include:

    • The Spring of Tampa Bay: A certified domestic violence prevention and emergency shelter agency.
    • Friends of Joshua House Foundation: A Tampa Bay safe haven for abused, abandoned, and neglected children that offers therapeutic residential group care for children ages 6 to 17.
    • The Child Abuse Council: A Hillsborough County organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and providing training, support, and information to parents.

The help that NTHS members provide to these organizations ranges from donating diapers, toys, and gifts to filling backpacks, along with donating funds and volunteering their time.

    NTHS Fundraisers and Fun
Ms. Hoffman’s priority for the Remington College – Tampa Campus NTHS chapter is to make sure its members are having fun and doing good deeds at the same time.

Thus far in 2011, NTHS students have hosted Hot Dog Days and Chinese New Year celebrations and have worked concession stands during recent Jimmy Buffett and Journey concerts in the area.

As Ms. Hoffman said, “Through our hard work, our NTHS chapter has raised almost $1,000 over the spring and summer, which we can use to give back to the community. Students always tell me how rewarding and fun it is to help fellow Tampa Bay residents. I couldn’t agree more, and it certainly gives me a good feeling as well.”
