  • Remington College of Nursing Students Take a Stand Against Heart Disease

Ten students from Remington College of Nursing, in Lake Mary, Florida, joined millions of people across America in taking a stand against heart disease as volunteers for the American Heart Association’s Greater Orlando Heart Walk, held at Loch Haven Park on Saturday, October 2, 2010.

Our students volunteered from 5:30 a.m. to 12 noon, assisting in setup at the Orlando Health tent, distributing T-shirts to the Orlando Health team members and other Heart Walk participants, handing out giveaways, making and hanging Remington College of Nursing posters, giving out stickers, and cheering participants on at the starting line and, of course, the finish line.

Said Remington College of Nursing student and President of the Nursing Student Association Rachel Canady, “The students had a great time helping out and were so excited to participate in this community event! We are also hoping that our presence at such a well-attended event will increase the community's awareness of our new nursing program and our active involvement in the area.

More than 11,000 people ran or walked the 3.1-mile course, and the Heart Walk raised over $1 million for the American Heart Association. The funds raised will support projects like:

    • Getting up-to-the-minute research results to doctors so they can better prevent and treat heart disease. .
    • Sponsoring groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research. About 36,000 babies are born with heart defects each year – research is the key to saving these babies’ lives. .
    • Getting life-saving information to those who need it most – about how to eat better, how to recognize the warning signs of heart attack, and how to talk to a doctor about critical health choices.
