Who should become a registered Pharmacy Technician?

Registration shows employers that a Pharmacy Technician has met his or her state’s requirements to work in a pharmacy, handle prescription drugs, and work with patients. Graduates must be registered with their state’s Board of Pharmacy before pursuing employment.

Remington College will pay for each of our Pharmacy Technician graduate’s State Board of Pharmacy registration fee upon successful completion of the program.

Who should earn Pharmacy Technician Certifications?

Every Remington College Pharmacy Technician student is encouraged to pursue certifications either during or after their attendance in our diploma program

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “job opportunities for pharmacy technicians are expected to be good, especially for those with previous experience, formal training, or certification.”(2)

Although not every state requires Pharmacy Technicians to hold a Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate (CPht), all of our Pharmacy Technician instructors and staff help prepare students for the certification exam in an effort to best prepare them for future employment.(3)

Which type of certifications do Pharmacy Technicians need?

To ensure our graduates have opportunities to earn certifications while also pursuing their diploma, we include the two most common types of pharmacy technician certifications in our tuition price.

Sterile Products Certification for Pharmacy Technicians

Preparation for the Sterile Products Certification exam is included in the Pharmacy Technician diploma curriculum and Remington College covers the cost of the training materials as well as the cost of the first attempt at the certification exam.

This certification is used to demonstrate competence and training on the topic of sterile product preparation and aseptic techniques. Those who pass the exam will be certified to prepare IV’s and other medications that require injections.

Pharmacy Technician students will receive the Sterile Products Certification upon successful completion of the certification exam.

The Sterile Products Certification is administered by the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA). The NPTA is the largest professional organization for pharmacy technicians and is dedicated to improving the value of pharmacy technicians by advancing their roles in the profession. Certification fee: approximately $130

    Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certificate

Also included in the price of our Pharmacy Technician Diploma program tuition is the exam fee to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).(4)

Our Pharmacy Technician courses were designed to help prepare graduates for this certification to assist in future employment efforts.(3) Remington College Pharmacy Technician faculty and staff can help graduates arrange to take this certification, which is held off-campus and available after graduation.

To earn a CPhT, Pharmacy Technician graduates should:

    1. Complete an application to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE). Applications can be found online at www.ptcb.org. Completed PTCE applications must include the application fee payment, or specify if a sponsor is paying your application fee.
    2. Receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter that lists the dates of your eligibility period, instructions on how to schedule an examination appointment and other pertinent information about the examination.
    3. Schedule an examination appointment with Pearson VUE at a Pearson Professional Center (PPC) as soon as you receive your Authorization to Test (ATT) letter. You have 90 days to schedule and test once you’ve received an ATT.
    4. Take that test and get your results. When you have completed the PTCE a pass or fail result will be shown on the computer screen. You will also receive a score report in the mail 1-3 weeks after your test date, and passing candidates will also receive a CPhT certificate.

The Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certificate is offered through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The PTCB was established in 1995 and administers a nationally accredited certification which offers pharmacy technicians the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and competence across practice settings.(5) Application fee: $129
