A timely class discussion on ethics and social responsibility prompted a very real call to action for Melissa Asr’s Business Office Management class at Remington College – Shreveport Campus. On January 28, Ms. Asr’s class organized and held a bake sale at the Campus to benefit earthquake victims in Haiti.
After publicizing the bake sale by creating flyers and informally spreading the word around Campus, the students put their culinary skills to work to produce an impressive variety of cupcakes, brownies, cookies, cakes, and other treats. On the day of the sale, the students also donated their time to help sell the goodies. 'They started at 11:45, and by 1:30, they were completely sold out,' commented Campus President Jerry Driskill.
Campus management was so impressed with the students’ efforts that they matched 100 percent of the bake sale proceeds. The local Red Cross chapter visited the Campus on February 4 to collect the proceeds and applaud the students’ and the Campus’s worthwhile endeavor.
'I just have to say I’m humbled by the desire of our students to want to reach out and help those in need, and I’m proud of the efforts of Ms. Asr and all of the students who participated and worked to make the bake sale such a success. Our students do rock!' said Mr. Driskill.
