  • Harris County Citizen Corps Disaster Training Will Be Held on Webster, Texas College Campus

No cost eight-week course teaches the public to become citizen-responders when disaster strikes

Recent natural disasters have illustrated that people often have to rely on each other for help while they wait for emergency responders during a crisis.

To increase the number of people trained to respond to a disaster, Remington College - Houston Southeast Campus and the Harris County Citizen Corps are hosting a free eight-week training course to teach people the skills they need to respond to an emergency when professional responders are delayed or overwhelmed during a disaster.

The program is called CERT - Community Emergency Response Team. CERT promotes a partnership between emergency management and response agencies and the people in the community that they serve. The goal is to train members of the public basic response skills and then form teams in their communities.

The CERT training program is a 24 hour course that meets one evening a week for eight weeks. Training sessions cover disaster preparedness, fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, team organization and terrorism. A new terrorism module teaches CERT members about biological, nuclear, incendiary, chemical and explosive agents. The program concludes with a disaster simulation for participants to practice what they learned during the course.

Classes begin May 10 and will be held every Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 pm on the Remington College-Houston Southeast Campus, located at 20985 Interstate 45 South in Webster. There is no charge for the program.

"Whether it's a hurricane, terrorist attack or another type of catastrophe, citizen responders will play an important role in saving lives," said Robert Doty, Remington College-Houston Southeast Campus President. "We encourage Webster residents to take advantage of the opportunity to become a CERT member though this training program."
