Community Involvement

We give our students several opportunities to hear from and visit healthcare professionals in the Midlands region to gain first-hand perspectives about their field. While these activities may vary from class to class, below are some examples:

  • Guest speakers:
    • Local attorneys have spoken to our students about laws and litigation and how they can affect the medical field.
    • We’ve had physician office managers visit to explain the importance of professionalism in the medical assisting field and talk about what they look for in hiring new medical assistants.(1)
  • On-Campus events:
    • We hold an HIV Education and Awareness Day on Campus twice a year. With guidance from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), we offer free HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea testing to all students, staff, and faculty. Our Medical Assisting students help with lab and administrative duties, gaining valuable experience in the process.
  • Community participation:
    • Many of our medical assistant trainees have volunteered at facilities throughout the Midlands area, including hospice organizations, the Veterans Hospital, the Brian Center, and the Babcock Center.
    • They have also assisted with the Harvest Hope food bank, the Sistercare shelter for battered women and children, and numerous local health fairs, toy drives, food drives, school supply drives, and coat drives.

Program Summary

The Medical Assisting Certificate Program provides training in both administrative and clinical procedures. The objective of this Program is to prepare graduates for entry level positions as medical assistants in a clinical or administrative role, to include insurance billing clerks, medical billers, laboratory technicians, or medical receptionist in work locations such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home health agencies.

Program completion normally requires 9 months. The Program is divided into 9 monthly academic periods (modules) comprised of 8 months of classroom and laboratory instruction, which are delivered in a hybrid format,and one externship period. Classroom and laboratory instruction may include in-person and online components.

In order to be eligible for the externship period, students must successfully complete all courses in the academic periods and must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Upon successful completion of all areas of this Program, graduates will be awarded a Certificate in Medical Assisting
