You’ll begin working in a simulated chairside dental assisting setting beginning in the third month of your classes, so you can get a real feel for the role of dental assistant. You’ll stand out from other healthcare students on-campus by wearing light blue scrubs to class.

Classes are based around hands-on training, and as you progress through the Dental Assistant training program, you’ll have the opportunity to receive training and instruction in our:

  • X-ray lab/lecture room.
  • Computer lab.
  • Operative dental lab.

When you’re ready for your externship and the last module of your program, you’ll get the opportunity to practice your dental assisting skills in an actual dental office.(2)

What better way to prepare for the job than to learn from and work side by side with practicing dental professionals!(1)

Once you complete your externship and finish your dental assistant training at Remington College in Webster, you’ll be eligible to take the state exam to become a Registered Dental Assistant!

We’re with you each step of the way, offering help as you prepare for the certification exam by giving you access to tutors and exam study materials while you’re in school. And, we cover the fee for your first exam attempt!(3)

Community Involvement: Remington College gives back, and dental assisting students at our Houston Southeast Campus have helped the local community safeguard its children by creating “toothprints.” Since dental imprints are as unique as fingerprints, capturing a child’s toothprint can help with identification and can even aid scent-dog tracking to help find a missing child. Safe Smiles is one of many community activities that you, as a Remington College Dental Assisting student, can participate in to practice your skills and meet members of the community.

Program Summary

The Dental Assisting Diploma Program provides training in performing invasive procedures, such as placing retraction cords and dental dams, as well as non-invasive procedures, such as patient education. The Program also provides training in preparing operatories for dental patient treatment, taking dental impressions, and identifying oral disease indications.

The objective of this Program is to prepare graduates for entry-level positions as dental assistants in work locations such as dentist offices.

Program completion normally requires eight months (32 weeks) for full-time students (assuming the externship is completed at 40 hours per week).

The Dental Assisting Diploma Program is divided into seven monthly academic periods and one externship period. Students must successfully complete the academic periods with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in order to be eligible to participate in the externship period.

Each state has a dental practice act that governs the duties dental assistants can perform. According to the Texas Workforce Commission: Effective September 1, 2006, to become a registered dental assistant in the state of Texas, a student must complete a mandatory short course approved by The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE). An approved provider list can be found on the TSBDE website: http://www.tsbde.state.tx.us. By law, a dental assistant must be registered with TSBDE in order to take X-rays at a dentist’s office.

Upon successful completion of all areas of this Program, graduates will be awarded a Diploma in Dental Assisting.

Dental Assisting Certifications

Earning a dental assisting certification may make a difference in your job search and career prospects after graduation.(1)

In fact, certain states require dental assistants to earn additional credentials or certifications beyond their educational training.(2) Job candidates must also have current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).(2) Whether it’s state or national credentials, Remington College strongly recommends that graduates of our Dental Assisting diploma program pursue certifications that may help open more doors to employment.

Dental Assistant Certificates Available

Remington College encourages all Dental Assistant students to take their certification exam once they complete our program, and we can cover your entire examination fee for your first attempt!(3) And not only that, but CPR certification is built into our core Dental Assisting coursework.

Below are the main certification options available to our Dental Assistant students in Texas. If a student decides to pursue more than one certification or requires a retest, the student is responsible for payment and registration for each additional certification and exam.

Texas Dental Assistant Students

Dental Assistant students at our Fort Worth, North Houston, or Houston Southeast campuses can become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) through the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE), and Remington College covers the application and activation fees for our students’ first attempt at this certification.(3) Registration with the TSBDE is required in order to take x-rays in a dentist office.(7)

Learn more about this licensure here: http://www.tsbde.texas.gov/RDA.html.
