Curriculum

Cosmetologists provide haircutting, hairstyling, make-up application, skin care, and nail care to their clients in salons and spas. They may be part-time or full-time, and many can work a flexible schedule with nights and weekends common in the industry. The Cosmetology curriculum in our program also includes an overview of small business principles and basics, to help students learn the skills that may be necessary to open their own salon or spa.

Job Outlook

If you want to help others look and feel their best, a career in cosmetology could be a good fit.(1) Cosmetologists often work on their feet in salons and spas, and evening and weekend hours are common. Cosmetologists are required to successfully complete a designated amount of hours of education as prescribed by their state. It may also help if prospective cosmetologists are artistic, detail oriented, and personable. An interest in fashion may also help cosmetologists stay in touch with trends and changing client needs.

WHAT TASKS ARE INCLUDED IN COSMETOLOGY CAREERS?

Cosmetologists are beauty professionals who typically have training in the following disciplines:

  • Hair Care: Hair care includes cutting, styling, coloring, and chemically treating hair. Cosmetologists who choose to specialize in hair care are called hairdressers or hairstylists, and they often work in salons or spas.
  • Nail Care: Some cosmetologists, known as nail technicians or manicurists, focus exclusively on nail care, which includes manicures, pedicures, polish, and extensions.
  • Skin Care: Skin care specialists who specialize in advanced cleansing, waxing, and exfoliation techniques.

WHAT ARE THE JOB PROSPECTS FOR THOSE WITH COSMETOLOGY TRAINING?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), overall employment for those seeking a career as a hairdresser, hairstylist, or cosmetologist is expected to increase by 10 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than average for all occupations.(2)

IS LICENSING REQUIRED FOR COSMETOLOGY CAREERS?

In order to begin work, cosmetologists must be licensed. Licensing requirements vary by state, but generally candidates are required to graduate from a cosmetology program and pass the state licensing exam.(3)
