What is database management?

When you're considering what career path you should pursue, you might want to look for something that aligns with your interests and utilizes your skills. If you're analytical, a problem solver and passionate about technology, a career as a database administrator could be the perfect fit for you.1

Better still, the employment of database administrators is projected to grow 9 percent from 2018 to 2028.2  This could mean there are employment opportunities out there for you.1

But, what is database management? In today's digital world, companies are receiving valuable data from all over. Database management systems are used for data storage and data organization.

What do database administrators do?

A database admin, or DBA, serves as the gatekeeper to these important database management systems. They ensure all data is available to authorized personnel and secured from those who aren't. For a person working in database management, typical duties include:

The most important responsibilities of a DBA are to make sure users are able to easily find the information they need and ensure the systems are running smoothly. Databases can contain confidential data, from financial information to medical records. It's important for a database admin to be familiar with security methods and keep the database locked down from unauthorized users. Some database administrators are even in charge of designing and developing entirely new databases.

While there are many general database administrators in the workforce, there are also opportunities to specialize.
