As a Medical Assisting student, you’ll train with an array of medical equipment such as the following:
Blood pressure units
Otoscopes to examine the ear
Ophthalmoscopes to examine the eye
Phlebotomy equipment for drawing blood
Mannequins for practicing CPR
Autoclaves to sterilize surgical instruments such as hemostats, scissors, tweezers, scalpels
Wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches for patient rehabilitation
You can build your skills with training in phlebotomy procedures, injections, vital signs, throat cultures, glucose/cholesterol testing, urinalyses, electronic health records, and more.

Community Involvement
Our Medical Assisting students in Memphis have taken class or field trips to medical facilities like Concentra Medical Center, Saint Jude’s Hospital, and Signature Healthcare Rehabilitation. Others have volunteered with St. Jude’s Hospital and Methodist Hospital.

Students have also hosted visitors including the Army National Guard and Reproductive Health representatives. Some of our Medical Assisting graduates also visit our classes to talk about their in-field experiences.(1)
On-Campus events include blood drives for Life Blood, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer “Walk for the Cure,” the March of Dimes “March for Babies,” along with Toys for Tots, Coats for Kids, Mid-South Food Bank, bone marrow, and voter registration drives.
Externship sites have included several physicians’ offices, Sentry Healthcare, The Shot Nurse, and the University of Tennessee Cancer Institute.(2)
Organizations that have hired our Memphis Medical Assisting graduates include Christ Community Health Services, GI Centers of the Mid-South, Memphis Children’s Clinic, Memphis Cardiology, Pediatrics East, and the New Start Family Obstetrical Care.(1)

The Medical Assisting Diploma Program provides training in both administrative and clinical procedures, including the basic elements of coding for the healthcare and insurance industries. The objective of this Program is to prepare graduates for entry-level positions such as medical assistant, clinical or medical administrative assistant, insurance billing clerk, medical biller, collections and billing clerk, or medical receptionist in work locations such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, medical supply businesses, and home health agencies.
Program completion normally requires 12 months for full-time students. The Program is divided into 12 monthly academic periods (modules) comprised of 11 months of classroom and laboratory instruction and one externship period, which are delivered in a hybrid format. In the hybrid format, some courses are delivered residentially and some courses are delivered via distance education (i.e., on-line).
In order to be eligible for the externship period, students must successfully complete all courses in the academic periods and must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
Upon successful completion of all areas of this Program, graduates will be awarded a Diploma in Medical Assisting.
